It’s A Marathon, Not A Sprint!

I have always been perplexed by how some of my friends can do this. I have to tell you that there’s many things I can do BUT this is one thing I can’t. What am I talking about? Watch today’s video! It’s BURSTING WITH ENERGY!!! P.S. It’s quite a long video, so if you’re in a rush, start at 5 minutes:

I don’t know about you but that last minute really got me excited and jumping about!

When everyone was running at a consistent pace, that guy just BURNT the track with his feet!!! It’s like he just started a 100 Metre sprint! Amazing!

When I saw that happen, I started asking myself a lot of questions.

  1. How did he do that?
  2. Why can’t I do that yet?
  3. What can I do TODAY to achieve that kind of feat?

I reviewed the video a few times and then I found the answer and I’m going to share with you what I saw. But before I tell you that, don’t you think that long-distance running mirrors life?

Take a second to think about it.

I believe it’s the purest sport in the Olympics.

It’s just Man against Man.

No adversary, just competitors.

No outer hurdles, just inner battles.

Are you starting to see it yet? As such, I immediately knew that I could definitely learn something from this video although it just shows men running around in circles. And no, it has nothing to do with endurance.

The Pain In My Neck

I think the lesson came directly to me than it did you because I’m experiencing the situation.

You see, recently I’ve been up to a lot of projects (one of them being the Law of Attraction Inner Circle Coach Club that got an overwhelming response!) and it’s causing a strain on my neck. I would get up at 1 in the afternoon and work on my computer until 5 in the morning.

As a result, I would wake up the next day feeling lethargic and nothing would get done! I’ve decided to put this to an end and “coincidentally” I found this video and therein lies my solution.

How Did He Do That?!

The race winner in the last clip was certainly not my pick because if you noticed, he wasn’t even in the same film frame as the leaders of the pack until the last 4-5 seconds!

But therein lies the answer:

It’s A Marathon, Not A Sprint! Pace Yourself!

You see, that man understood what it took to win. He paced himself all the way until the end, leaving him just enough gas to sprint the most important part of the race - the final 100 Metres!

Why Can’t I Do That Yet?

I finally understand why I can’t run a marathon and complete it successfully without stopping - and why sometimes I don’t complete what I start (oops did I just say that out loud?)

1) Pacing Yourself Isn’t As Easy As It Sounds

The truth is that pacing yourself is rather difficult. It requires extensive self-knowledge about your own limits and the only way to test your limits is to:

  • Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone.
  • We both know this is probably one of the most difficult things to do especially if you’re a person who doesn’t like change. If you are that kind of person, I have a little advantage over you because I love change. Hot Tip: Feel the fear and do it anyway!

  • Risk Hurting Yourself.
  • Nobody likes to get hurt but testing your limits sometimes require this. WARNING: I recently found out why I’ve been getting long term injuries back to back ever since 2007. I watched a Tony Robbins seminar and something clicked when he talked about another athlete’s definition of accomplishment being pushing yourself to the limit until you have nothing left. I had the same belief and my body can’t take it.

  • Face Failures.
  • This again will result in pain if you still hold on to the societal definition of failure. If you still are, let me tell you something. My friend says this in a lot of his seminars,“Increase your failure rate to increase your success rate.” Think about it.

2) The Hunger For Instant Gratification

Don’t you just hate it when you have to wait? It doesn’t matter wait for what, but don’t you just hate it? I know I do!

I learnt this lesson the hard way - almost failing all my subjects in Junior College - and I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone.

And although having patience and building up your successes the old fashioned way does work, there doesn’t seem to be any thrill in it. For instance, I now have 350 subscribers and I feel that’s only natural considering the endless hours I put into it.

But then again, where did I get the notion of getting a 1000 subscribers on my first week? Probably the advertisements that promise instant gratification all day long.

But one thing’s for certain, the stage I am at right now is only temporary. I feel a “Dip” coming really soon. Some time ago, I wrote about “The Dip” and the amazing implications of riding it. I highly recommend you read it.

What Can I Do Today To Achieve That Feat?

I observed that as a result of my need for instant gratification, this is what happens:

Day 1 - Extremely Enthusiastic - Gear 5!

Day 3 - Get Even More Enthusiastic - Gear 7!

Day 5 - Trying To Be Enthusiastic - Gear 3!

Day 7 - Falls Sick - Breakdown!

I would probably win if life was a sprint, but it’s not! So after careful thought, this is what my personal strategy is going to look like:

Day 1 - Enthusiastic - Gear 3!

Day 3 - See some results, kick it up a notch - Gear 4!

Day 5 - Stay at the same level - Gear 4.

Day 7 - Kick it up a notch - Gear 5!

Day 9 - Stay at the same level - Gear 5.

Day 11 - Kick it up a notch - Gear 6!

Day 13 - Getting momentum, kick it up a notch - Gear 7!

If you read between the lines, you’d see that the second strategy is based on CONSISTENT increases in pace followed by an ADAPTATION period.

I don’t know if you’d agree with me, but I believe that is how that guy managed to SPRINT the last 100 Metres. I’ll try to make my point by comparing the two leaders of the pack and the winner of the race with this illustration:

Leaders Of Pack: This is the final 400 Metres! We’re going to give our all and sprint all the way!!!

WINNER: Last 400 Metres eh? I’ll pick it up a bit.

Leaders of Pack: Last 100 Metres! GO! GO! GO!

WINNER: Last 100 Metres already? I’ve got tons of energy left! Time to BURN baby!

Leaders of Pack: HEY! What’s happening?! Why is that guy running 10 times faster than me?!

WINNER: I’m just getting started!

(Former) Leaders of Pack: We don’t believe it! That’s not fair! He must be taking steroids!

WINNER: WOO HOO! It’s called pacing, Suckers! Better luck next time… ;)

Ok, I might have gotten a bit carried away with the dialogue but I hope I got the point across because it’s VERY IMPORTANT!

Although the leaders and the winner were seemingly running at the same pace in the last 400 Metres, the difference lie in how they got to that pace.

The leaders were clearly giving whatever they had left in the last lap but the winner’s body had adapted to the steady increments in pace, it didn’t seem that exhausting.

The next thing you know… BAM! HE’S GONE!

What Do You Think?

Do you agree with this strategy? I would really love to know what you think! =)
