Controversy: Luck Is Needed For Success
By SaiF on Mar 20, 2008 in Thought Provoking

Does luck really play a part in success? Is it really true that in order for you to have that big break you have to have a certain amount of luck? But if that were true, then doesn’t that mean only a few of us are ever going to succeed? And even then we won’t know when?
All of the above are questions I have personally been battling with ever since I had a talk with my uncle. He told me that in order for you to be successful, you have to have a burning desire, determination and here’s the curve ball he threw at me : luck. Today’s video answered all of my questions although I had to watch it 3 times to finally get my answers. Watch it now:
You might be thinking,”He took 7 minutes to make ONE point?!” Well actually, he made two.
What Is Luck?
I was actually thinking about this question even before I watched this video. So, what is luck? I know it’s something that’s out of my control. That one’s for sure. It’s also probably getting something that you did not earn - think Lottery winners.
What Happens When One Gets Lucky?
I’d like to think of luck as a lightning strike. It never hits the same spot twice - although I might have heard otherwise. The thing about being lucky is that it’s a statistically improbable event if you look at it Mathematically.
So the fact that it wasn’t supposed to happen says something about the Lottery winner. He wasn’t supposed to have it! So I believe we’ve all heard this before, the Lottery winners always wind up in a bigger debt than they were before they won the million dollars.
Can Luck Be Created?
After watching this video, I’ve had an enlightenment. I truly believe what the masses call “luck” can be created when we know the magic combination to the lock. You know how people always say,”Oh he’s lucky.. He was at the right place and the right time“?
It got me asking myself,”What if I can put myself at the right place and the right time?” I’ll then be in the same circumstances to be lucky won’t I? Definitely.
Hold up a second. So, if I’m able to put myself in the same circumstances as that lucky person, then I’ll be able to get the same “luck” as him? Now, doesn’t that mean there is no “luck” to begin with and only “accidents”?
I believe what James Ray was trying to illustrate with the story of the actor who got 10 Curtain Calls was that it was an accident. He was doing the right things at the right time in the right way but he didn’t plan to do it and thus it is not reproducible!
That was his first point.
So If That’s The Case, Is There Even Such A Thing As Luck In The First Place?
James Ray made another point in the video when he kept asking the woman to work harder, to change her attitude, to channel the energy and to get a Mastermind Group to help her.
I believe he was trying to say that you can use all the methods in the world and still fail. You can try to motivate yourself all you want but you’re not going to open the lock if you don’t know the combination.
I believe he was trying to say the Success Is A Science. If you do something X number of times in this way and do another thing Y number of times in a certain way, BOOM! The result is going to be success. And it is always going to be success no matter how lazy or how motivated you may be.
If you work the system, the system will work for you.
But Is That All There Is To Luck?
As much as I’d like to think that there is no such thing as luck, I’ve seen my fair share of lucky people. I once went to a carnival and a middle-aged woman who was holding on to 3 lucky draw coupons and won 2 prizes!
One thing I noticed was that she seemed to be expecting it. She stood eagerly in front of the stage when the rest were sitting down further back probably thinking,”I don’t think I’m going to win this.. There’s thousands of people here!”
A closer example to home would be my Aunt. She never and I mean never leaves a Lucky Draw without a prize. And most of the time she would win one of the bigger prizes. Is that just crazy or what?!
So, I’m starting to think that James Ray forgot that among other laws there’s also the Law of Attraction. I’m starting to believe that lucky people are lucky because they expect with full conviction that they will be lucky when they win something. And as a result they bring about what they think about.
To take it to a higher level, one of the most common traits among the most successful CEO’s is that they expect success. Even when all the odds are against them, they see it before anyone else and what they saw in their minds are now undeniable wonders. Another nuance of feeling lucky?
Tony Robbins once said,“Luck is where Preparation meets Opportunity. Without Preparation, even with the right Opportunity, there is no ‘luck’ because the Opportunity cannot be taken advantage of and usedâ€
Tony’s definition seems to imply that one has to wait for a “lucky break”. Does that mean he believes in luck too?
Talk Back To Me
What do you think? I’m really starting to get confused here.. Is there such a thing as luck?
Although this really isn’t important to know, it’s one of those things that would kill you if you don’t know the answer to it.
I would really love to hear your perspective on this issue.
What’s next?

So, if luck is not really luck, what is the combination to attract GOOD LUCK???
I sure seem to attract bad luck. Don’t need anymore of that. As far as expecting things I do, but they don’t come out the way I plan.
